Simple Homestyle Biscuits

Super tender and perfectly simple homestyle biscuits. Slathered with butter and jam or used to soak up gravy... these are the perfect addition to any meal.

Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar optional
Fats
  • 1/4 cup butter cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
Wet Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. 
  2. Mix together all dry ingredients
  3. Cut in fats until mix has pea sized crumbs of butter and shortening
  4. Slowly add in milk until dough comes together to form a ball. May add extra milk as needed a spoonful at a time. 
  5. Turn out dough to flour dusted work surface and flatten dough into 1 inch thick rectangle. Fold rectangle in half and flatten again. repeat once to twice more. Cut biscuits and arrange in skillet or on baking sheet. 
  6. Place in oven for 20 minutes or until tops are golden. Enjoy immediately.
