Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches

So some history first. I’m an island girl. I grew up on a 3 by 5 mile island in Florida closer to Cuba than South Beach. However, I spent highschool 45 mins outside of Philadelphia. And it took me relocating all the way to PA to try this amazing, gooey, cheesy sandwich. But better late than never I suppose?

On a side note, it’s only out of respect for PA that I will call this a hoagie. Or require you to use hoagie rolls to make them. Next time it will be a sub. Because that’s what they’re called. Subs, as in submarines. Because that’s what they look like. Got it? Alright, so onto the hoagie.

Now you’ll want real meat for this ok? Not the glued together frozen beef that comes out of the box. Really just look for a sale on london broil and just ask your butcher to shave it against the grain for you. I find a little over 1 lb for approximately $5 on sale at my local supermarket. Try to pick a cut that has light marbling in it cause that fat will melt away and leave you with tender strips full of flavor.

If you prefer to slice it yourself do make sure it’s as thin as you can make it. A good way to do this is freeze the steak for about 20-30 minutes to firm the meat up a bit and allow you to have better control when you’re trying to get those thin slices.

We like a little heat so there’s an option to add jalapenos with your veggies but it isn’t a deal breaker. If you like even more heat you could shake some red pepper flakes on top of the melted cheese too!

P.S. – They taste better when little people help!

Prep Time 10 minutes mins
Cook Time 15 minutes mins
Total Time 25 minutes mins
Servings: 4 6 inch hoagies
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 4 6 inch hoagie rolls
  • 1 Tbsp oil any kind you prefer
  • 1 lb steak shaved
  • 1/2 med green pepper strips
  • 1/4 med onion sliced
  • 3 lg button mushrooms sliced
  • 1-2 med jalapenos optional
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices white cheddar cheese
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Heat skillet to med-high heat. Prep your veggies and hoagie rolls. All veggies should be in strips or slices. Hoagie rolls should be split to allow filling.
  2. When skillet is hot add oil and swirl around bottom of pan. Add and sear steak slices for approximately 5 mins. When steak is mostly browned add veggies and saute all together for another 5 mins or until onion is translucent and peppers and mushrooms have softened. Add Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to pan and stir.
  3. Spread mix evenly across the bottom of pan or into 4 equal piles. Add 2 cheese slices on top of piles and remove from heat. Allow cheese to melt before adding to hoagie rolls.
    Serve immediately
