The laundry folding trick you haven’t heard of

I can remember my mom sitting on the couch pulling clothes out of a hamper and folding each one before putting it in it’s designated pile. Usually there would be one so out of control it would inevitably fall over. Or on a really good day all the piles would stay upright and be moved to back into the hamper for transport to their homes in various drawers.

Ok, so I don’t do that. Sorry Mom. May I suggest instead bringing them straight to the bedroom to start? Cause you know that’s where they live anyway. Next, I fully recommend dumping them in a huge pile on the bed. Toss the hamper to the side. Now here’s the part I’ve never heard of anyone doing.

I sort the entire pile into sections by where they’re stored. My hanging stuff, folded stuff like t-shirts and pjs. When my husband was still in uniform there was that pile, plus his hanging stuff, t-shirts etc.

When I sort out all the bigger stuff I’m left with all the unmentionables which I do first since they’re top drawer items. Then I just do the pile belonging to the next drawer down. Fold and put directly away. When the pile is finished, close the drawer and know you won’t need to go back in it till next load.

I’m sure it’s an extra step but I find it’s a quicker method for me. I believe because when it’s all t-shirts you get in a sort of groove. A laundry master rhythm if you will. There’s less mental energy spent on each item before the actual folding happens. Which for me means this method is worth it’s weight in gold! If you’re particular about each item matching the others in size when finished (hello, KonMari) is that they’re more likely to be the same if you do them all at once, too!

Let me know if you try this method of folding in the comments. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with it!

Well I *kinda* do it like this. I fold them as I pull them off the line, so they’re already in stacks as to where they go and I just put them away when I come in. Boom! Done.

I can see that working if I used a clothesline. Mine currently come out of the dryer in a big, tangled pile! But organizing by location is key for sure.
