So I was talking to a friend recently about how nice clean sheets feel. Her husband had actually asked if there was a way to wash them every day so they could have the fresh sheets feeling every night going to bed. Of course the idea of washing the linens every single day is insane but it got me thinking. I’m a bit particular about how the bed is made. But the nights I have freshly washed sheets aren’t particularly wonderful unless I overdid it on the fabric softener and I can smell the fresh laundry scent as I climb into bed.
So why, if I am so particular, wouldn’t I like the linen washing days more? I slowly began to realize (as long as you aren’t letting the bed sheets get really gross) it probably doesn’t have anything to do with clean sheets. It’s all about how you’re making the bed.
I’ve learned that when most people make the bed it means pulling up the sheets and covers and fluffing the pillows. And that’s where it ends. It looks ok and therefore the mission is accomplished. Especially if you’re going from not making the bed at all. It’s easier to think of making the bed every day as a 1 minute job anyone can do.
Here’s what you should do instead.
First, learn how to properly make your bed. I mean strip everything but the fitted sheet off the bed. Start by lifting off one corner and waving it up and down to knock off anything that may have snuck into the bed.
Then go around and and tuck everything under till the fitted sheet is tight over the mattress. I do this with each layer. Smoothing over the sheets and blankets and fluffing the pillows and duvet before moving on to the next layer. I tuck the end of the flat sheets under the mattress but I don’t get fancy with corners.
The other trick I do is to use a linen spray on each layer for a little refresh and a light scent. Not a lot. Don’t soak your sheets. Just a squirt or two per layer.
I know it sounds tedious but it never takes me more than 3 minutes from start to finish. But my bed feels fresh EVERY SINGLE NIGHT when I go to sleep. For 3 minutes a day!
So what do you think? Why not commit to properly making your bed for one week and see how much nicer bedtime can be!
